Modelling of Working Groups in Computer Supported Cooperative Work

چکیده
Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) is a new multidisciplinary research area aiming at establishing theories for the computerised support of working groups in organisations, the so-called groupware systems. Beside sociology and management science, this field requires knowledge from various areas of computer science: data-communication, human-computer interfaces, information systems design. CSCW is an area in which social and technical sciences meet. It is an area in which scientists truly attempt to bridge the gap between disciplines. In this paper we make an attempt to do just that. We identify possibilities of using modelling techniques from the design of information systems to build models of group processes. In order to learn how to model working groups, a strict discipline of modelling is needed. In this paper we describe that discipline, illustrating it with examples. This paper is intended as a methodological excursion. Our approach is rather how to model than which modelling technique to choose.

Requirements Engineering – one of the macro-activities of Sofware Engineering – is a systematic process of capturing, modelling and documenting requirements through an iteractive and cooperative approach of problem analysis, documentation of the resulting observations in a variety of formats of representations and verification of the accuracy of the acquired understanding [13]. It is an activit...
متن کاملNetmeeting: a Tool for Collaborative Simulation Modelling
Effective collaboration in simulation modelling is possibly one of the key factors in the success of a simulation project. Computer Supported Cooperative Work is a research field that has investigated this in other domains. This field has led to the technological development of software, or groupware, to facilitate group working. This paper investigates the appropriateness of groupware in simul...
متن کاملA STUDY OF TURN - TAKING IN A COMPUTER - SUPPORTED GROUP TASK 3 current CSCW
Synchronous computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) tools are intended to provide opportunities for remotely located groups to work together in a manner akin to groups meeting face-to-face. Little is understood , however, of what may innuence the eeectiveness of group work performed under these circumstances. One likely factor is the way in which``oor control', or turn management is supporte...
متن کاملModelling Cooperative Work at a Medical Department: Full paper
Based on ethnographic fieldwork, and the modelling of work processes at a medical department, this paper considers some of the opportunities and challenges involved in working with models in a complex work setting. The paper introduces a flexible modelling tool to CSCW, called the DCR Portal, and considers how it may be used to model complex work settings collaboratively. Further, the paper dis...

Although the term “Computer Supported Cooperative Work” (CSCW) finds its roots in the mideighties and has been the topic to various conferences and research programs, the best-selling software applications of this area consist of nothing else but flavoured electronic mail and a shared database. With some exceptions to the rule, e.g. hot-line support teams, CSCW-applications had only little effe...
